Series name: X-Men Blue
Canon notes:
This is the current run of X-Men Blue (2017-present) that follows All New X-Men & Extraordinary X-Men. Basically, in this timeline, the original five X-Men (Jean Grey, Cyclops, Beast, Angel and Iceman) are brought to the future by Beast's current-day counterpart to show the world what the X-Men are meant to be. Jean is part of a team that's currently mentored by Magneto and operates out of a secret base in Madripoor.
Jean comes in from issue #28 of X-Men Blue & the Venomized mini-series, at the conclusion of the Poison-X arc.
Species: Human
History: here. Jean was also previously in the Fleet for a short time where she made friends with Kitty, Kurt and Remy. I would like to let her keep those memories when she comes back this time around.
Personality:
Jean is, by nature, tenacious and determined. Brought forward into the future some 40+ years in order to right wrongs and make the world a better place, she has a heavy burden on her shoulders and it's not something that's always sat easily with her - it's hard to be told that your older counterpart was possessed by a cosmic entity, died, and the whole world went to hell in a handbasket afterward. For a while, she rejected her identity as Jean, an X-Man and even a mutant in search of a normal life; it's not something that ever lasts long with her, though, and Jean's whole life is tethered to the X-Men whether she wants it to be or not.
She has a strong sense of morality but isn't afraid to compromise that if she feels like it's in the best interest of the other person - at least as far as telepathy is concerned. If it's a matter of life and death, Jean would rather ask forgiveness than permission, and her tendency to make those judgment calls where other peoples' boundaries are concerned is something she struggles to balance. When it comes to physical damage, though, Jean has a massive guilt complex and will always do whatever she can to minimize casualties and preserve life. She tends toward maiming or stunning an enemy over killing it, always, and feels remorse if circumstances mean that collateral damage is unavoidable.
Being a telepath, overt emotion and expression isn't exactly her forte (everything is just easier inside your mind, after all), but she does possess a keen insight into how other people tick solely because she's been eavesdropping on other people's thoughts for almost as long as she can remember. She can be possessive of her friends, owing to the fact that both as a time-traveler and a mutant, she has very little to ground her and call her own, but she always has their best interests at heart.
In order to protect herself, she adopts a devil-may-care sarcasm and a flippant attitude about the day to day but deep down, Jean is immensely crippled by an anxiety to be her best self, to make a difference, to be perfect. It manifests in how she can sacrifice herself for her team without so much as a thought but not be able to talk to Scott about their relationship, in how she can be outwardly annoyed by Quentin Quire but would do anything to keep him safe.
More than anything, Jean wants to matter. She isn't immune from the ego complex that plagues many telepaths and given that she's been brought into this timeline for a distinct purpose - to fix it - she wants very much for every action she takes to matter. She wants it to be worth it. She doesn't want to live with regrets, with what-ifs and maybes, and it makes her a little bit more reckless than she might be normally. She's a natural born leader and easily commands her team of X-Men and often those who work alongside them (Venom is a notable example) by being the first to lay her life on the line if it comes to it.
Abilities:
A laundry list, really. The basics, though, are that Jean is a high-powered telepath and telekinetic, able to communicate mind-to-mind, read minds, create illusions, create shields and use telekinetic blasts.
Augment Skillset: pilot
Sample:
( Jean isn't a stranger to space. She isn't a stranger to time travel. She is, however, a stranger of being kidnapped to a space fleet, released, and kidnapped back. What's the deal? What's so special about her that the Atroma want to bring her back for another round? She's a telepath, sure, but there's other telepaths in the world. There's other mutants. She isn't any better than the rest of them. Still, there's a whisper in the back of her mind that she tamps down and locks shut - something she vacuum seals to keep it from contaminating the rest of her mind. You have the Phoenix Force. You're chosen. It's always you. Death and rebirth, cycling on. She turns on the camera and decides to just do it live. Stream of consciousness is still a thing in 2019, isn't it? )
Look, I was here before. The people were cool but the forced captivity was something I wasn't a fan of. I'm just a girl, ok? There's no reason why I need to be here over anyone else and I have shit I need to do back home. How do you get the Atroma to spring you permanently? Do you have to pay them off or something? Because I think I could swing something. I've got friends in high places.
( It's probably useless but Jean feels the need for agency. So much of her life depends on teamwork, on relying upon others to do the right thing and do their part and she's not someone who likes relinquishing control. It takes everything in her not to just take over; this is why group projects were never a good idea in school and should be permanently banned. The Atroma can stab themselves in the eye with a rusted spork for all she cares. She just wants to go home, finish her mission, grab a slice and do the same thing tomorrow. That's it. The normal desires of a twentysomething with the most dangerous job in the world, right? Right. )
Seriously, though. I'm not here for it. I just need to get back home and if anyone has left and come back before, hit me with your ideas. I'm not above telekinetically frying all the circuits on this piece of shit just to make a point. I think it might end in some consequences I don't want, though, so if you have ideas that aren't going to turn me into a vegetable, I'm all ears.
